[ARCHIVED] Fish Kill at Pigeon Lake

Picking-up fish on the shore

Fish kill is a natural process that happens every year when warm water near the surface of a water body combines with increased algae to suck the oxygen out of deeper water at night which results in fish dying.

This year, due to the record breaking heatwave, fish kill has come earlier than in past years and residents around Pigeon Lake may be finding more dead fish washing up on the shore.

Residents (including SV residents where agreements have been approved) that choose to pick-up the dead fish are able to take them to the Lakedell and Mulhurst Bay Transfer Stations during regular Transfer Station hours as long as:

  • All fish must be bagged in plastic and tightly secured.
  • Bags placed in the regular roll off bins; place carefully, not thrown on top of jagged glass.

Should the number of fish continue to grow, the County will be updating the process and provide information to the public.
