Public Notice: Update on Strychnine Availability for Gopher Control
The County of Wetaskiwin is aware of recent updates from the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) regarding the emergency use approval of 2% liquid strychnine for Richardson’s ground squirrel (gopher) control in parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan.
At this time, the County does not yet have access to the product and full details on local availability, timelines, and requirements are still being confirmed.
What we know so far:
- The approval is temporary and in place until November 2027.
- Distribution to municipalities may take several weeks.
- Producers may be required to complete a mandatory training program before accessing the product.
- Availability may be limited and subject to specific conditions.
In the meantime, producers are encouraged to continue managing gopher populations using alternative methods.
If you would like to receive updates as more information becomes available, please contact the Stephen Majek (780-361-6226 or email) to have your name added to our strychnine update list.
We will continue to share updates through the County website and official channels as more details are confirmed.
