[ARCHIVED] News Release: Council Approved 2026 Budget

News Release

County of Wetaskiwin Council has approved the 2026 Operating and Capital Budgets, providing a financial framework to support the delivery of core municipal services and planned infrastructure investments in the year ahead.

The 2026 budget includes a $28 million tax-supported operating budget to maintain essential services residents rely on each day, as well as a $14 million capital budget to support infrastructure, facilities, and long-term asset management.

“With mounting infrastructure liabilities and inadequate funding opportunities, Council is taking the steps necessary to ensure continued financial viability,” said Reeve Josh Bishop. “Slow and steady increases to the operations budget will address the identified gaps and keep up with inflationary pressures. Efficiency is always looked at first and our team is diligent in bringing forward cost saving ideas for consideration.”

While the budget establishes planned expenditures for 2026, municipal tax rates will be set in the spring once final property assessment values are confirmed and requisitions are received for the Provincial Education Property Tax and Seniors Housing.

Key Highlights of Budget 2026

  • The 2026 Budget focuses on maintaining core services while strategically investing in the County’s long-term infrastructure, community assets, and economic sustainability.
  • Significant infrastructure investments in 2026 include doubling of the bridge maintenance program, funding for two bridge replacements and future engineering, gravel road improvements, chip sealing, pavement overlays, and additional investment in future road infrastructure.
  • Continued investment in recreation and community amenities to enhance quality of life, including trail expansion, dock replacements, and facility improvements.

Commitment to long-term planning and sustainability through funding for master plan studies, future infrastructure engineering, and proactive investments that support responsible growth and financial resilience.
