[ARCHIVED] Let's stay safe this May Long Weekend!

May Long Reminder

The County of Wetaskiwin remains under a Fire Restriction. Did you know 67% of wildfires are human caused?

Let's stay safe this May Long Weekend and burn safely!

Never leave a campfire unattended. Soak it, stir it and soak it again until cool to the touch to ensure it is extinguished. Read more about Safe Campfire tips.

What is allowed:

  • Safe wood campfires within fire rings
  • Backyard fire pits and burn barrels on private land
  • BBQs and Smokers that use solid fuels (wood chips or pellets, charcoal briquettes, etc.)
    • Propane, Natural Gas, or Electrically powered cooking, heating, and lighting appliances
    • Open flame oil devices (turkey deep fryers, tiki torches)
    • Indoor wood fires contained within a device with a chimney and spark arrestor
    • Pellet fueled appliances

Off-Highway Vehicles can start wildfires – check frequently to ensure hotspots are free of debris, and make sure mufflers and spark arrestors are working properly. Read more about Off-Highway vehicle tips.

When operating equipment, clear debris from moving parts, check your muffler and keep equipment in good repair. Do not operate equipment in tall grass. Keep watch of your surroundings and ensure you have sufficient firefighting equipment and water available. Equipment fires or work-related sparks, friction and hot exhaust can cause even small amounts of dry fuels to ignite into a wildfire and spread easily.

Thank you for your continued efforts in helping keep County of Wetaskiwin residents and communities safe!
