December Safety Topic: Impaired Driving

Impaired driving is more than just alcohol — it includes cannabis, other drugs, fatigue, and even prescription or over-the-counter medications. Driving under the influence of any of these puts lives at risk and carries serious consequences. 

 Types of Impairment:  

  • Alcohol
  • Fatigue
  • Medications (prescribed or OTC)
  • Cannabis & other mind-altering drugs

 Prevention Tips:  

  • Always plan for a designated driver (DD)
  • Use a taxi, rideshare, or DD service if plans change

Hosting for the Holidays? Here are some tips to ensure everyone gets home safe: 

  • Collect keys at the door 
  • Offer snacks and non-alcoholic options 
  • Arrange sober rides home

Penalties:  

  • Immediate Roadside Sanctions (IRS) under the Traffic Safety Act
  • Possible Criminal Code charges
  • License suspension begins immediately upon receiving a Notice of Administrative Penalty
  • Penalties escalate with repeat offences
