Update: May 8, 2026
The Government of Alberta strychnine program is in its final development stage with final approvals underway. Supply in 2026 will be extremely limited. We recommend planning ahead, with possible access to product in the County of Wetaskiwin expected in early 2027.
For those who have used strychnine in the past, expect increased requirements, such as:
- Safety and reporting
- Training
- Use
- Monitoring
- Disposal
Strychnine should be used with caution and only when all other control options are ineffective during severe gopher infestations.
Search the strychnine product label by its registration number (28751) at Health Canada.

The County of Wetaskiwin is aware of recent updates from the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) regarding the emergency use approval of 2% liquid strychnine for Richardson’s ground squirrel (gopher) control in parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan.
At this time, the County does not yet have access to the product and full details on local availability, timelines, and requirements are still being confirmed.
What we know so far:
- The approval is temporary and in place until November 2027.
- Distribution to municipalities may take several weeks.
- Producers may be required to complete a mandatory training program before accessing the product.
- Availability may be limited and subject to specific conditions.
In the meantime, producers are encouraged to continue managing gopher populations using alternative methods.

We will continue to share updates through the County website and official channels as more details are confirmed.
